The Best Years of Your Life
For my final project I'm thinking of doing a digital image self portrait series and incorporating them into an altered book of sorts. I feel that college is a time when people really change and start to really solidify the people they'll be throughout their life. Personally, I've changed quite a bit since my freshman year, and as a senior who will graduate in May I'd like to honor that transition. I think an altered book is an appropriate medium to communicate this concept of progressive change over time. I'm interested in displaying myself in a variety of ways that will represent different stages of growth I've experienced in the last 4 years.

I think an altered book could be really cool but I'd be careful about it looking too scrap booky
ReplyDeleteUsing the book as a format is an interesting way to go with this. The concept is certainly there, I am just unclear on how the pages of the book will be put together. Will it be photographic, mixed media, abstract?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will pull this off, however, I'd be wary of too much sentimentality in your work. I usually write-off art tied to that, to be honest. I do think collage is appropriate for this piece. Maybe you can find more abstract ways of representing yourself and your growth?
ReplyDeleteI think the book could be a very fitting to telling the story of your growth, and I would really focusing on the growth; thinking about what you have gained and lost throughout your experience and how this can be represented in the images.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of composing a book is very strong. It made me think of a year book, and when you look back in your old school year books you tend to realize how much you've changed physically, spiritually, or personally.
ReplyDeleteI like this idea of transition. Will this be a series of self portraits to show this? Maybe you could also include objects that you have had over your years here, ones important to you that are not anymore?
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of putting it in a book and displaying that. I think its really cool that you're taking a two dimensional image and essentially making it part of a sculpturesque piece.
ReplyDeleteBooks are cool, will you do the binding yourself?. It would be interesting also to play with some self portraits broken up across multiple pages.
ReplyDeleteVery neat idea. Love altered books. Can't wait to see how you incorporate the digital image into it. I think this would be really neat if you took a lot of self images but also of images of campus and other students and manipulated them in some way to form the pages of the book. Interactions with other students is one thing that personally really shaped me, so it makes sense to pay homage to the groups you see every day, even if you don't know each face individually.
ReplyDeleteI think using a book is a good idea. My only concern is having it look too much like a scrapbook, so I am interested in seeing how you execute this project. The addition of objects or abstractions that represent yourself may be interesting to have.
ReplyDeleteDo you plan on digitally manipulating the photos prior to printing them out? Will they be hand manipulated after the printing?
